Before the Bath

"Before the bath" by Ismail Kadare. In Flash Fiction Forward(which I'm just going to call FFF from now on).  That is my favorite short story so far in FFF. I had to read it a few times to have the slightest grasp on what it's about. I know the guy dies but I'm have a hard time figuring out if it happened in the past or present. The final sentence is what trips me up. "This was the hell of Agamemnon of the House of Atreus, murdered by his wife on the first day of his return from the Plains of Troy, at thirteen hundred hours and twenty minutes, March 31, in the year eleven hundred and ninety-nine before our era". I also question why he's killed, I know there's a line in there where he says he slept with a captive or something along those lines. I wonder did he deserve it or maybe the woman was having an affair or knew of his and wanted him gone.  Cause to me killing someone with an ax in a bath tub is pretty personal.  During the repeating part of the story I think that was his mind going over his last five seconds of life.
